Saying NO Experience

Saying no experience Performance 1994 Edit 1994 1999 and 2006 2 min 41 seconds Performance: This was a performance about gaining the ability to say no. After experiencing domestic violence, I made performances that were demonstrations of how to transform those memories. In this piece I was saying no and turning my head, I had been struck in the head and had suffered a broken eardrum that was repaired through surgery. My belief system had been challenge; I had to relearn to believe in the power of speech and the word no. This piece is the exploration of saying no while in a state of mind of having been physically abused. Through the repetition and gaining power of expression, I began the process of learning to say something another my not of wanted to hear. (This action was video taped.)

Linke Nine

Linke Nine Performance: 1995 Edit: 1995 Pre Puerto Rico Excerpt 3 min 15 seconds In the performance I wore a wedding dress and drank milk from a container suspended above me. The milk came out of the container in a stream, referencing how milk sprays out of a breast when squeezed. As, the milk finished I removed the clothing. In the performance it seemed it was over when the milk had stopped flowing but the recording cameras were allowed to continue until I had removed the milk soaked clothing.

Feral

Feral Performance: 1996 Video/Edit: 1996 4 minutes 12 seconds Performance: In Mexico I spent part of a summer with a woman who had been pregnant and lost her child. Even though she no longer had the baby she was still lactating. Her breasts some how would not stop producing milk probably a month. It was sad and difficult to see her struggle with the loss of her child, and as well she had lost her partner. In the performance I drank milk from a container suspended above me. The milk came out of the container in a stream, referencing how milk sprays out of a breast when squeezed. It was somewhat like drowning having all this milk pouring into my mouth. But at the same time it was consumption and nourishment. It references the powers of fertility and destruction. (This action was video taped.) Video taped on a tripod I set up myself.

Halo

Halo Performance in 2005 Video/Edit 2006 2007 Arcosanti Palonia Garden, Arizona 10 minutes Performance: This performance was in memory of a friend who was murdered. It was a public healing process. It examines grief, shock and loss. I placed myself standing in a cabinet with a glass panel the length of the door. The cabinet was situated inside a Palonia Tree Garden that was in full bloom. The moon was full as these trees only flower every seven years at the full moon. A sound track played with vocal tracks of the telling of dreams, fears, the story I had been told of her death and my difficulty accepting that it had happened. Interspersed between these stories were bits of experimental music, most intense some soothing. During the performance I slowly took a key from the floor of the cabinet. The cabinet’s size didn’t allow me to reach down or bend over so I slowly was able to get the key with my foot and raise my foot and get it with my hand. Eventually as the stories ended I let myself out of the cabinet. The black dress I was wearing was attached to the cabinet and remained inside as I went out.
